Call your Representatives
Ask your representatives to make sure funds for the U.S. strategy to end LRA violence are included in the national budget when final decisions are made. Call on your lunch break, in between classes – whenever! It’s easy and it just takes a minute.
STEP 1: Who’s your representative?
Use our handy dandy look-up tool to find your Members of Congress and get their contact information.
STEP 2: Keep these things in mind
- Be confident. Your representatives work for you. In order to represent you well, they need to know what you care about.
- Be polite. Kindness will get you much farther than being grumpy.
- Be clear. Request specific action. See the sample script for the specific ask.
- Be brief. Congressional staffers are b-u-s-y. They’ll love you if you’re concise.
- Be yourself. The sample script is there to help you, but don’t talk like a robot! Explain why you care.
STEP 3: Make the call
When someone answers your call:
- Politely introduce yourself. Remember to mention you’re a constituent!
- Ask to speak to the staffer who handles foreign affairs. If he/she isn’t available, leave a voicemail.
- Here’s a script to help you with your call, but feel free to personalize it:
Hi, my name is _____________. I’m a constituent of Rep./Sen. ___________ and I’m very concerned about the violence targeted against families in central Africa by the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA). [You can add here about how you have been involved in addressing this crisis or why it is so important to you]
ENDING 1 - If you are calling a SENATE office:
I’m calling to ask Sen. _____________to please sign the bipartisan letter to Senators Patrick Leahy and Lindsey Graham, asking them to make sure needed resources are included in the national budget to put the US strategy to stop LRA violence into action. Thank you so much for your time and I hope the Senator signs on.ENDING 2 - If you are calling a HOUSE office:
I’m calling to ask Representative __________ to please sign the bipartisan letter to Representatives Kay Granger and Nita Lowey, asking them to make sure needed resources are included in the national budget to put the US strategy to stop LRA violence into action. Thank you so much for your time and hope the Representative signs on.
IMPORTANT: Before you hang up, make sure to give the staffer your zip code.
